Who would you go for? Lester Piggot? Al Capone? Surely not Adolf?

He is better known for invading Poland and starting the second world war.
But Adolf Hitler was also an inveterate tax dodger, it emerged yesterday, who systematically evaded paying his tax bills both before and after he became Germany's dictator.
According to new records discovered in a Munich archive, by the time he became Germany's chancellor in 1933 Hitler owed more than 400,000 Reichsmarks in unpaid taxes.

I saw this in the news the other day but for "most famous" I would still have to go with Al Capone, as outlined in "The Untouchables".

Capone had an illegal income of $1 million a year in the 1930's ($20 million by today's standards) yet reported none of it to the IRS.

The authorities could never connect him to organized crime until some geek bean counter figured out that his failure to report illegal income amounted to income tax evasion.

The only crime Al Capone was ever convicted of was tax evasion.   Maybe he should have run for president and asked that his tax debt be forgiven.
