News pictures are showing the aircraft on the line with others. Was he strapped in when it went off or did it happen as he was crewing in?

Very unconfirmed - possibly linked to a stupidly phrased twitter message earlier today. Despite the RAF announcing that the family have requested a period of grace to exist before the details and name are released, one of the daily papers (the one that conveniently rhymes with daily fail), has named a pilot - not Red 1.
Of course, no one can know better, as no one else has reported it. Quite rightly too.

Black Hawks are quite common - IIRC they're generally aircraft earmarked to become Red ones at some point in the near future, and used as spares at Scampton.

Posted: Tue Nov 08, 2011 8:43 pmReally? Never seen a Black one till these past few days, although i was aware there are black ones - See them a lot living near Lincoln, there was a solitary 'Red Arrow' at RAF Waddington for a day or two a few weeks back flying about also...
