I pretty sure that this Flying Fortress is one of only a handful still airworthy. 

Or rather, was one......

Makes me sad to see a piece of history go away, regardless the cause.

There are not many still up and about, however thankfully there are those out there who have the means and are determined to keep them flying.  Thankfully in this case all passengers made it out safely!

The most important thing is nobody was killed or injured. The plane, well they can be rebuilt and I hope Liberty Belle is rebuilt. I've seen a 3 B-17 fly past some years ago and that was moving. We've only got one flying in Europe at present, one under repair and the French have grounded theirs thanks to some new idiotic EAA rules

The Liberty Belle Foundation has another B-17 that they are currently restoring. They'll probably scavenge what they can from the wreckage of the Liberty Belle and use it on this other B-17 they are working on.

Really sad to see that the Liberty Belle is gone. I had a chance to walk through her a few years ago at my local airport. Was a beautiful plane.

And people, it's not a crash! The plane just had an engine fire and made an emergency landing in a field. The fire then destroyed the plane.

Sad to see a grand aircraft go, I hope Sally B is OK for RAF Waddington in a few weeks time, not seen her for some 20 years.
