Why Do 727's Have One Red Window?

Hey, I'm not sure whether its been asked before, but I've always wondered why some aircraft have one cockpit window painted red?

I've seen it on alot of 727's, like the picture above. Its always the second window on the right side. Is it some sort of escape window or something?

Thanks, I would love to know, its always interested me.

You are precisely right, that window can open and the flight crew can escape through it if necessary.  Painting red around it on the outside helpes rescuers such as myself know which one it is in case we have to assist.

Brilliant! Thankyou, I couldn't have had a better person answer it than yourself, someone who its there for! aha.

Just a quickie, how come not all modern jets have one nowadays? I've only ever seen it on the old 727.

Thanks, :)

Probably two reasons, one not all aircraft have opening cockpit windows.  They instead use a roof hatch of some sort for emergency egress of the flight crew.  Secondly, I've never seen an exit painted as prominently as on that particular aircraft.  I don't believe there is a rule on how well it has to be marked, just that it is marked in some fashion.

Before posting this, I went to airliner.net and viewed quite a few photos of different aircraft.  I only found a few 727 photos with this same marking, but not all of them, and mainly on cargo aircraft.  Likewise I did not see it often appear on other types as well.
