An airport in Tampa, Florida, has had to temporarily close its runways to keep up with Earth's magnetic north pole, which is drifting toward Russia at a rate of 40 miles per year.

Fox News reports that the international airport was forced to adjust the signs on its busiest runway Thursday because pilots depend on the magnetic fields to navigate. The runway will be closed until

Jan. 13, and will re-open with new taxiway signs that indicate its new location on aviation charts, the Tampa Bay Tribune reports.

I read this earlier. It's interesting, but my favorite part was the title:

Amazing how this has become a headline story.  This is a common occurence, we had to change our 17/35 to 18/36 five years ago as its magnetic heading had shifted from 354 to 357 over the course of 60 years.

Next thing you know someone reporter will try and link this story to blackbirds... ::)

Nice how they don't even bother to say what airport it is, as though there is only one airport in Tampa.

If you believe Hollywood, there won't be any news, or anything else either. Yet the scientists don't seem very worried about it.

this happens.

about 7 years ago they had to re-designate our runway to 14-32.

it used to be 13-31, but because the change was enough to round up to the next whole number, they had to redo the numbers  :D

This explains why I never showed up at work last Monday! Somebody moved the poles and didn't tell me.   :P
