What's the propose of this square on the windshield of the Beechcraft Baron?

It contains a heating element to de-ice the windshield.

And I was wondering why the HUD was not working

Joe would be correct, but IRL most of the planes I've seen with those have them placed directly over the pilot's side instead of the middle of the screen.  Reason is, it doesn't de-ice the whole windshield, just what is in the box.
