Flying in Los Angeles. Good places?

Going over to LA sometime in the near future (probably either next summer or the summer afterwards)

Anyway... my mum suggested that I look into seeing what flying I could do whilst I was over there. It is going to be a trip over for everyone, we have somewhere to stay so that is all alright.

Any good schools or clubs you could reccomend for gaining a PPL or hours towards?

First thing you need to look into is the visa's. they can be rather annoying to get hold of as you need to go into your local embassy prob London and sort it out there.

I would have thought my parents have all that sorted fine. We have been to the states a couple of times with no problems.

you cant just go to the states and fly anymore under the tourist visa waiver program. You now need to get a student visa which you'll need to apply for. If I remember rightly one of our members recently did his in florida so he'll be able to give you better info.

Actually, on one of the websites we found just then (Long Beach Flying Club and Flight Academy) they had the following in 'extra costs':

International Student Visa (if required) $ 250.00


So I presume that is it.

Perhaps I should talk to one of the officers at cadets. He is going to Florida to fly fairly soon, so I presume he knows of all this.


I knew there would be issues with background checks... but not quite so far as all that. I suppose I forgot about the jump in country bit haha.

It's pretty pricey in the LA area, but there is no shortage of schools. I know San Diego better, so I can't recommend any particular school.
One sure thing is that it's great for flying over there- lots of mild, sunny days, plenty of airports, and interesting scenery.

And if you can fly over LA at night, it is simply gorgeous, lights as far as the eye can see, it looks like a grid from the matrix.

San Diego is a definate must see if you are in SoCal as well, much nicer than LA and much friendlier.
