Unfortunately Dunsfold Aerodrome (like other airfields around the country) is owned by a consortium of property developers. Their 'Masterplan' for the future is to remove aviation completely & replace it with a new village settlement. This is in accordance with current government policy of covering the south-east of England with housing. I don't know what would happen if planning permission is refused but I assume the consortium could either pull out or force the aviation side to close down. I don't think too many local residents would object to the airfield being closed for ever. The point is; what would they prefer on their doorsteps? A thriving airfield or a brand new housing development?

PS. I find it ironic that Kemble Open Day last weekend was sponsored by Redrow Homes. This company is part of the consortium involved with the "eco-town" proposals for the former Ford airfield. It all looks very cosy but they seem to have forgotten to point out that there is an open prison on the site. http://www.fordairfieldecotown.co.uk/
