[quote]There are increasing cases of new residents moving into a location, then to complain and campaign against activities that have taken place for many years, especially when such noise would or should have been obvious before choosing to live in the locality.

Effectively, I am proposing

Need something like that for the US.  It amazes me how people buy a house 1/2 mile off the end of a runway, then complain about the airplanes.

Reminds me of the day of the last Concorde flights at Heathrow a few years ago. To pass the time between the departure of the Edinburgh flight and the 3 incoming "final" arrivals, the missus and I went to a pub in Longford (just by the western end of 27R) and got chatting to a few of the locals. They were moaning about how the airport noise was too much, how they wished they lived elsewhere and the nightmare that was LHR. A short debate on my part followed, the airport has been there longer than you etc. Imagine my astonishment when the locals all said they worked at the airport  ::)  ::) and had moved there courtesy of BAA at a knock down rent rate.

NIMBYs...  >:(

If anyone can find/start a petition like that in the US, I'd sign it and make up as many names as I could to sign it (maybe that's a bad idea).

The airport I fly out of used to be a practice site for the local Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopters, until people decided that they didn't like the noise, and made them move. ::)

We also have people trying to change the traffic patterns at our airport because they say we purposely fly over their house while they're eating dinner. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

There is no possible way these people didn't know there was an airport close to their homes - it's been here 66 years, is on the National Record of Historic Places (or whatever it is), and even was a stopping point for Charles Lindbergh.

NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) :P

While I agree with the proposal in this case I'm not convinced that these petitions are any more than a gimmick. You cannot run national government on public petitions however sensible they might be. I'm afraid that the British government target of building 3 million new homes by 2020 (some of these on green belt land), not to mention airport extension plans, will make the situation worse, not better. It's quite possible that some of these homes will be built on the sites of airfields.
