DFC and Bar. And another Bar.

I saw this over on PPrune this evening.

When the latest operational honours were announced on Friday, all the headlines deservedly went to the Royal Marine who received the George Cross for lying on a grenade in the 'Stan to save his comrades (and miraculously surviving unscathed).

However, also in the list was Wing Commander P J Robinson DFC (and Bar) RAF, receiving his second Bar to his DFC, which is not something seen very often nowadays (although I'm sure with continued ops in Iraq and the 'Stan one or two others may get repeat awards)

He now has 3* DFCs - he was awarded the medal in 2003, the first Bar in 2006, and the second in 2008.

Distinguished Flying Cross

He's a Chinook pilot I believe, so probably some quite dangerous stuff under fire. I believe they have all been in Afghanistan.

WOW  :o  I hear stories of heroic service members doing this once in a while but this is the first I have heard of anyone surviving it!

Job well done by the wing commander as well!!

interesting, a day pack works better than kevlar helmet (google Cpl Dunham, a US Marine who jumped on a grenade with his helmet, didnt survive)

Perversely, I think a full day sack (and body armour underneath) may well work better even in a "controlled", experimental environment. One can only assume when the gallant Cpl Dunham placed his helmet over the grenade it did not cope with the explosion inside it - combat helmets of course being designed to protect from the outside objects, shrapnel and explosions. Bl**dy brave bloke.
