Checking out the flight deck.

I always contemplate asking the flight attendants if I can take a look at the cockpit.

What are the chances I will get to go in, say hi to the crew, take a few pictures. I'm flying with Air Canada, Air China, and American Eagle in the next month, are different airlines more strict about this topic?

Also, when should I ask to take a look?

It really depends on whether the aircraft is on time when you arrive/depart. If the aircraft is early/ on time, most pilots won't mind a quick visit while at the stand. :).....of course, it all goes down to the individual pilots aswell ;)

personally, even in a bit of a time crunch, no crew i have flown with has denied a person that request. it happens at least once a month.

Either way, just ask. All the times I've flown commercially, I usually lag behind the rest of the folks de-boarding and try to strike up a conversation with the F/O, tell him I'm way into aviation and photography and more times that not they let me sit up in the right seat and get off a few snaps. I'd wait 'til after the flight, since they aren't so busy up front.

The way I see it, most pilots simply love to fly. And seeing that a kid that's into aviation probably really makes them feel good. So why not.

With Air China though, it may be difficult to break the communication barrier. Most Chinese pilots I've heard on my scanner while spotting are somewhat lacking in English. It doesn't hurt to try though.
