Rare sight today!

While climbing a local "mountain" with my friend today (Sleeping Giant), I spotted something very rare in my area... A C-130!

No idea what it was doing; but it was headed South towards New Haven/Long Island Sound (Presumably to somewhere in New York).

Really interesting, since it was fairly low (By my poor guess; I'd say less than 10,000 feet, but much more than 3,000). Shame I didn't have a better camera :(

Given my silly little Fujifilm Finepix V10 and it's 5.1MP image; plus the distance of the aircraft; I'd say it wasn't that bad of a picture ;D

Image

May not be able to tell from the picture; but I could tell it in a heartbeat. Second C-130 I've ever seen! (The first being Fat Albert).

Such a good day :D

Lucky bugger. :P

Even here in Australia, with all our dirt or grass strips, a Herc is a rare sight outside of any RAAF base. We usually only get one a year at YSSY.

I'm just surprised that somebody living in the USA has only seen a C-130 twice. :P

It's very rare to see any Military aircraft in my area. This is the second fixed-wing!

(The first was an A-10 before they moved them out of Bradley! THAT was lucky!)

Very little military passes over here, too. I was thinking more along the lines of airshows, perhaps (unless the USAF doesn't send many C-130s to shows).

I often hear a flock of them droning slowly overhead at high altitude.

I have no idea where they come from, or where they are going to, but the sound is unmistakable...even when they cannot be seen!.

I remember when I went to see my gran a giant C130 flew above us... like, on final or thereabouts.

Not the best photo in the world, but its a nice aircraft. I have seen perhaps 3 or 4 in the past few years.

Yep, the C-130 is a great aircraft, untill you're flying in one into Iraq with your gear on,  crammed into the back with a lot of other soldiers, the temperature 110+ degrees out, no airflow in the back, and the pilot doing evasive maneauvering to decrease the chance of being shot at while landing....
