Hi guys, im a member of the ATC and doing my DofE award and i picked aircraft recognition as my Skill. I've been asked to produce a project of an aircraft in service in the Royal Air Force. Of course me being a lover of the beast i picked the C-17. Does anyone know where i would be able to get any technical information about the C-17 or if anyone here knows any information that could be useful please post below...

I've ridden in a C-17 a couple times, and i've been in them to photograph a few times at airshows.

Yeah iv also been lucky enough to sit in a C-17 whilst doing circuits and actually being in the cockpit.

I dont really use wikipedia as it can be unreliable on some information.

Ok im done on the RAF section of the C-17. can anyone explain to me how many C-17s the USAF currently have, i cant find it on their site and theres alot of writing elswhere.

Look at Page 20.

After a quick scan through the wikipedia article; 190 aircraft thats the ones currently in service or ordered

Does anyone know what else i could add with this little project.

I am doing marksmanship as my skill  ;D   Just need to go and shoot the damn thing and hit (hit well!) and thats that done. ATC member too.

Yes Wiki can be unreliable, but mostly for petty things such as when fanboys attack games. I think someone defaced the Xbox, Halo or Microsoft page on Wiki. After tracing the IP it went to a Sony employee

Just go to Brize.....C17s, and if you're really lucky some proper transport aircraft (JK...I like the C17 )

Under the lease the RAF machines are kept to the same spec as the USAF example too.

Sadly, other than that they are ugly and grey, that is the extent of my C-17 knowledge. Have a look over on UKAR for lots of Brize approach shots.

I guess for your project you could try and pop out to some airshows in the next few months and see if you can get some pictures if one is flying there.

I already done that mic. I had several good shots inside the beast that is the C-17. I had some pics in the cockpit and in the cargo hold.

The RAF send their pilots over every time they need to do a sim! (as do the RAAF and the CAF I suspect). Nice trip to the states every 6 months.

Does anyone know what the vortices are used for on the tip of the wing?
