Yesterday, here in Lima, police took two aviation spotters to a police station for filming and photographing around Lima International...

Police says it is because of the Economic forums that there will be here, and they must keep the airport area safe, but even after proving that they are only spotters, they were not released,

Why? Only because one of them is from Lebanese descendence..

What is more sad is that they both appeared in every newspaper today, and were showed as criminals... I was really shocked.

Their names are Lazaro Bugosen and Juan Manuel Temoche. Almost every peruvian aviation fan has heard about any of them, and the excellent photos they make... You just search their names in A.net or JP.net

Police says that from September 2007, the Lima International area was restricted, and photos could not be taken... but really nobody knew that, until yesterday.

Exactly, by making our own countries into prisons we give terrorists exactly what they want. i 'd rather life free then 'safe'.

My local airport has a great place to watch planes from, it's on a hill and the planes land right over your head. There's even a little rotary where you can get out of traffic and park. But if you park there the police will come by and force you to leave...

Whoever says we live in a free country (USA) is lying.

I would definately like some input from the spotters on Simv on this one. I might soon have a decent telephoto lens, and I would love to go to places like Beech Factory, Mid Continent, or McConnell AFB to do some shooting (with camera). But I am afraid of being arrested.

A may be posting a bit of a belated response to this thread, but I hope this helps:

1st) Contact (re: ask) the airports and municipal authorities about where and when you intend to go spotting. They can not only tell you where you can do such activities, but how you may also go about it. By staying in touch with the authorities (both at the airport and with law enforcement), you keep yourself in the clear, and help them know you are not up to anything you shouldn't be.

2nd) Always follow instructions from the authorities and the law. I know that we all want to get that special/great shot to wow your friends and fellow enthusiasts with, but it is not worth fines and or incarceration. Furthermore, it may be helpful to remember that spotting is a privilege, and the first concerns of the airlines, the airport officials, and law enforcement is the safe operation of aviation business. At best, spotting is a tertiary concern.

Further, ignorance of the law is not a defense. Simply not knowing whether or not something is legal to do is not a suitable argument to justify breaking the law - whether you agree or not with that law. So, play it safe; ask first if something can be done and avoid future regrets and legal problems.

Also, as a final note, 99% of law enforcement officials and airport officials are NOT your enemies. Yes, there are sometimes abuses (and sometimes my local supermarket sells fruit that may be a little ripe), but that is but a small fraction of the overall good work that many people in those professions do. When you have to juggle safety, security, profitability, cargo, passengers, staff from various companies, and other logistics, you can understand how far down the ladder amateur photographers come. It is not meant to be a personal insult to you , and it isn't meant to strip you of freedoms. It is just the very complex mechanics of today's aviation world.

So, take a deep breath, smile, be polite, ask for permission and clarification, and I am willing to bet you will get some great shots - and maybe even be given access to better shots simply for making the effort to do things correctly and politely (I have shots of me in the cockpit of a 747-400 simply for following my own advice listed above; I will treasure those forever, and it always reminds the value of what I am even now rambling on about).

Best of luck to you all, and I hope you get some great shots. And, I hope the photographers above are able to clear themselves and get on to better things.

It is VERY rare for this to happen.....almost every civil airport is fine, as are most military ones. At worse the police might ask you to move on, but I've never heard of arrests before...at least not in the UK...

Hehe, yeah, sometimes when im annoyed by the overly big amount of scurity staff at public places i take photographs of support structures, pilars, camera's etc. Never had any response though, another funny thing is to look deeply into the camera, smile, and quikly walk away

That is a rather foolish thing to do.....and would almost certainly get attention from the Police in London, where they may seize your camera and even arrest you

(they've just introduced a new campaign warning the public about suspicious people taking photos

)

Try the EHAM 'smile and wave' intersection then... that one was closed because of the traffic jams it generated (thats the onramp to the EHAM terrain where you drive behind the overflow parking)

Sounds to me like you're assuming you live in a free country. If you're a US resident at least then perhaps you shouldn't. They burned our rights when they signed the Patriot Act.

I am not sure if you were aware of this, but political discussions are not allowed here on the forums. I humbly ask that you remove or edit your preceding post to bring it in line with these rules. It isn't meant to be a judgment of you or suppress anyone, it is jsut meant to keep things friendly and happy here in SimV land. With all the divergent views on things such as politics and religion, it is hard to make accusative or polarized statements about such things without stepping on someone's toes.
