We are rather good at not honouring those who deserve it and when we do it is way, way too late........That stiff upper lip really does get in the way sometimes.

It is often frustrating than progress comes so slowly, but when it does, it is still just as sweet.  This is a well-deserved recognition.

They will in the end, but only after another 50 years of asking or when one or two are still alive

That fitted in with modern PC ideals. Too many strong feelings against Bomber Command. I don't think a campaign medal will be awarded while any of those airmen are still alive. In that case it's not important.

Sadly their story was much more amenable in this day and age.
And yes, Bomber Command were who I was thinking of - losses second only to the extremely brave sailors of the German U-Boat fleet.
