Charlie!!!!! (spotting at Brize Norton)

Postby Mictheslik » Thu Feb 14, 2008 6:01 pm

Well...half term is upon me and I need something to keep me occupied. My young persons railcard has arrived in the post, so I can access cheap train fares :D

My question is not where to go at Brize, I have a good guide, but the best day of the week to go in terms of activity....is it sporadic and unpredictable? Or are there certain scheduled flights which are pretty much guaranteed? I can easily get a cheap ticket to Oxford then a bus all the way to Brize from the station.....

If it happens to be a Wednesday (my only day off in the week) that you go Mic, give me a ring (you know my mobile no.) and I'll gladly pck you up from Oxford station and join you  :)
About time I snapped some military, instead of the usual tubes... and it would be good to meet up again  8-)

Why not just go and see what happens like plenty of others do. ::) Better to spend a day seeing even two or three VC10s/Tristars/C17s than dozens of buses surely?

Well i spent a day at RAF Brize Norton, my pics are uploaded in the screenshots section. if you go there you wil see pretty much anything taking off. C-17's doing circuits and in the evening flying out to duty, VC 10's going to refuel etc and on the odd day you may see a harrier, i saw 2 :) ;)

On the odd day you could see anything, you just happened to be there when two Harriers were in, doesn't mean they're regular. ;)

::) ::) That's what I was planning on doing....but as Brize is an airport as such, it would be interesting to know if there are any scheduled flights....

oh and by the way steven, just because you don't like buses doesn't mean that other people don't aswell.....just remember, in a few years time, there will be buses at Brize instead of VC10s and Tristars ;)

I was actually going to use that argument.....but they are now pretty rare and interesting large transport types, not common airliners....

Well, they are still buses if you want to be pedantic. :P
No names, no pack drill but there seems to be a lot of unnecessary & childish niggling among some of the younger spotters on this forum. Worse than a lot of old women. A sort of one-upmanship & inverted snobbery that makes me feel like banging their heads together. ::) There's room for everyone in this hobby & it's supposed to be fun. ;)

PS. It's all a matter of preference. Some of my best friends go spotting at Heathrow & Gatwick.

VC10s are part time buses...

..Tristars are just rubbish, and have far too few engines... ;) ;D

As for best days, as Steven said its just pot luck in some respects. There's generally always something going round at some point in the day.

Isnt Brize Norton the busiest RAF base in the UK?
Because they also do civilian transport, Omar Air fly from there but they fly the tristar, i dont like them very much.

AFAIK the "busiest" RAF base is probably Linton on Ouse - or it was a couple of years ago.

Omni Air International are now very regular visitors as they run the scheduled flights to Ascension and the Falklands. Most days there appears to be an AN124 on the pan too.
