Sounds like the 707 could hardly make it across the Atlantic.

mmmm...strictly speaking that isn't true as the De Havilland Comet carried it's first fare paying passengers on 2nd May 1952....(first flight of the prototype was in 1949)

admittedly it went on to be a bit of a failure and need many modifications (thanks to those square windows) but nonetheless it's 5 years earlier :D
