I honestly cant remember when an aircraft last lost an engine on takeoff and got back. The last incident I can remember is the DC10 in chicago which lost its engine and crashed many years ago. Further incidents and information would be appreciated. Good job by the crew here.

Quote:
"The subsequent forces experienced by the engine supporting structure caused this to fail and for the number two engine to detach from the wing."

'Heroic efforts'

"The engine-to-wing support structure was designed to release the engine when extreme forces were applied, to prevent any structural damage to the wing".
End Quote.

That was a clever bit of design, then.... ;)...!

I just hope that the Avco Lycoming motor in the front of my Cessna 152 doesn't decide to do the same thing, during flight!..... :o...!

F.... ;)...!

The 747 into Amsterdam was another. Sadly, the reason he did not make it back was that the leading edge slats had been taken out on one wing. When they where deployed, one side out, one side in, the rest is history. However engines are designed to break away and providing that the wing and flying surfaces are not damaged, there is no reason that the aircraft should not land safely.

PS Just for info, the 737 engine is held on by 4 bolts forward, 13mm in diameter and 4 rear, 20mm in diameter.

Didn't a BOAC 707 lose one departing Heathrow in the 60s?

Here's one with a happy ending... good old 747. ;D

Kalitta Air Flight 825 departed from Chicago O'Hare International (ORD) at 20:10, and was en route to New York-JFK. While climbing through about 15,000 feet over Lake Michigan the crew heard a loud bang, the airplane yawed to the left, and the number one engine cockpit indications showed that the engine had lost all power. A visual inspection by the crew of the number one engine to check for damage revealed the pylon was still in place, but the engine was missing. The airplane diverted to DTW and landed without further incident.
After the airplane landed, the examination of the pylon revealed the forward portion was damaged with the entire forward bulkhead including the forward engine
mounts separated from the airplane. The examination The examination also revealed that the top of the mount rails and circumferentially inclusive of the four
mount bolts remained attached to the aft mount on the pylon.
