Two people are believed to have died in a helicopter crash near the Lanarkshire home of former World Rally Champion Colin McRae.

The helicopter came down at 1610 BST in Jerviswood, about a mile from Lanark, and is understood to have caught fire.

Strathclyde Police said there were no survivors and that no further details about the victims would be released until Sunday.

It's actually from what I read elsewhere, McRae's chopper.
Bad weekend for aviation, this the hurri crash and also a tigermoth down aswell.

Very sad to hear. Nothing official has confirmed it as involving Colin McRae yet (although some idiot on another forum is saying he was onboard but won't confirm how he knows, if he does at all ). The Telegraph is reporting though that McRae's agent has confirmed that he was onboard the helo at the time.

Quite. Surprising that the Telegraph mentioned it before an official announcement was made...

Sky was reporting a few hours ago that the helo was registered to him, but that isnt confirmed, just that it was close to his house.

At the moment, anyone claiming they know who was involved is either:

A - lying

or

B- breaking privacy laws regarding their work

Bear that in mind, until the official announcement comes out

Much as they should wait until an official announcement, I wouldn't call the Times and Telegraph sensationalist for quoting McRae's agent - remember they have to compete with t'internet, Sky News, BBC News 24 etc with the handicap of publishing the night before.

The police still haven't officially confirmed. However some of the more "adult" papers are saying Colin and his son John were on-board at the time of the accident.
Speaking as a rally fan of some years (I had the pleasure of watching Colin back in his British championship as well as WRC days) I'm rather upset

I think that if Colin McRae's death had been wrongly reported, Colin McRae himself would have made a statement or someone would have said that they had a beer with him last night for example. Can't understand why everyone is getting stressed about the news or paper reports of his death. Don't misunderstand me, it is a Tragedy, and a great loss to motor sport, not to mention his family, but the day of waiting for the coroner to release the names of the dead, with the evolution of the modern media that ended about 10 years ago. When was the last time they got it wrong? Also when was the last time anyone walked away from a chopper accident, they tend to end in a rather terminal way.

The man was far more man than I.  A couple years back after suffering an injury he stated that, if his injured hand got in the way he'd have a finger or two removed so he could better grip the wheel.  He was an almost mythical presence, and one I'd have swore was invincible.  It's always shocking when racers die of means other than racing or old age, doubly so with Colin.
