Hi i am planning a nice cold war (60's) B-52 flight tommorow (fs2004) but want to make it as real as possible, did they fly fake bomb runs on american cities during the cold war as practice? if so what would have been the flight plan?? Alts etc...???

thanks!

still do

Usually from what i have seen they fly military training routes that usually run about 1,000 to 1,500 AGL the routes take a round about way to reach the "target" which is usually centered around a remote and operational power plant or factory of some kind.

High altitude bombing run practice would likely have taken place in the middle of nowhere out in the nevada / arizona desert ranges from an altitude of over 30,000 feet.

great thanks!

during the 60's would they have used VOR as nav?
but seeing as this would be a mock nuclear run how would they nav with all the vors vaporised good old dead reckoning? (seeing that i am rubbish at dead reckoning i think i will use vor i guess they might have used them in friendly areas right?)

vor tacan or inertial navigation systems...

more likley than not though they would have received vectors from NORAD or airborne AWACS controllers.

if you are simulating a strike on an enemy nation, you might go in at tree top level, but for training exercises they rarely do this in places with any sort of population.

I'd imagine INS would be much more often - partially as once initially set up it will be reasonably accurate without further input. This was well demostrated by the Vulcan's during the Black Buck raids over the Falkland, the route there being fairly featureless (until the Islands appeared on radar). :)

yeah... very likely INS

but i guess since FS doesnt simulate INS than GPS would be the next best thing?

Yup, the two should be very similar.  INS can be "off", but from what I understand they're typically remarkably accurate.
