Home Building

Postby RichieB16 » Wed Oct 03, 2007 10:57 pm

Does anyone here have any experience or knowledge with home built aircraft.  I have thought about this for a long time and someday I think would like to try and do one (once I'm through dental school, have my PPL, and have some money...obviously).  But, its never to early to read about it and start to understand the process.  For quite some time, the thought of putting together a War Aircraft Replica ("W.A.R.") home built plane, specifically a Bf109 has really interested me.

I have no idea where to look, but does anyone know of any websites or books out there that might be a good place to start looking into this.  Again, this is something I'm not considering doing for at least 10 years or so...but I'm one of those people who have to start reading and understanding well before I begin something (I rarely do anything without a plan in the first place).

Anyway, its just a thought.

I want to build an airplane some day, too... but first I think I'll finally get involved with an EAA chapter that is building one. If you're not an EAA member, that's step 1, IMHO.

http://www.eaa.org/

There is so much stuff online it's overwhelming, but I've learned a lot there by just branching off a search for "kitplanes" or "homebuilding." The "best" site depends on what you want to build.

Kitplanes magazine is a less-overwhelming source of info, including editions with buyers' guides, which show just about every design out there with specs and prices. I'm pretty sure there's an online version.

Another good idea is to "ask the man who owns one"... look for a kitplane near you and see if you can introduce yourself to the owner, look at the plane,  and ask some questions.
Be warned: builder/pilots in particular will talk your ear off about their projects.
But they also like to take people for rides. ;)

I've got quite a lot of stuff as I'm a homebuilder. PM me a list of your desires and skills and I'll see what I can do to help you Richie ;)

There once was a cable/satellite channel about all things aircraft. One of the shows showed two guys assembling a homebuilt from start to finish. Really interesting stuff, guess I should of taped it for you.

I must confess that I never understood the attraction of scale warbirds. There are a lot of pretty homebuilts of all types available nowadays. If I was going to do this I would choose something with a proven track record & performance to match, like a Van's RV6 or RV8.

Naw, this particular plane was all metal, but the show looks very similar and may very well have been on Discovery Wings in the early days. Could possibly be an earlier version.
The late Jeff Ethell also had a show focusing on warbirds at the same time. There were other shows featuring civilian aircraft and even one that focused on various techniques(with appropriate disclaimers ;) ).

I agree, I'm hoping to start building an RV-7 next summer.  For the money, you can't beat it.  Easy handling, fast cruise speed (200mph), and fairly easy to build, the kits all come prepunched.  All you have to do is line up the holes and rivet away.

I'm not sure why I really want to build a scale warbird (or a full sized replica for that matter)...I just always have.  Perhaps it combines my loves of both flight and a time of history that has always fascinated me.  Projects like this, are never completely about practicability though.  For example, its the same reason why I'm building a high performance car right now using a 40 year old car.  For all intents and purposes, a modern car would be a better driver and would be just as fast.  Yet, I still would rather have the vintage design.  I think this is the same thing.  The practical part of me says otherwise, but the rest of me would rather have something unique and interesting rather than build the "norm" homebuilts.

What really strikes me as ironic though (and kind of funny) right now is that its you Doug that doesn't understand this attraction.  You see, when I was quite younger I learned about these homebuilt scale warbirds and thought it would be a really neat thing to do someday.  Almost like having the real thing.  I read into it a bit, but at the time I was much younger and the possibility was so far off in the distance it was unrealistic.  Its still unrealistic, but now that I'm a bit older and I have a foreseeable future with the time and resources to undergo such a project...it is a good time for me to start researching these possibilities.  When I was younger, I knew I wanted to do a Bf109 replica.  But again, it was such an impossible idea, that over time it got pushed to the back of my mind and semi-forgotten, waiting for a day (like today) when I was older and could seriously begin looking at the idea.  All I needed was a spark, something that stirred my interests to get the ball rolling.  Here is the ironic part  ;).  You see, I was looking at your Bob Survivor photo thread and I saw that Bf109 that needed restoring.  That same voice inside of me that loves restoring my old car was fascinated with that plane and thought it would be an awesome project.  Unfortunately, the price for such an aircraft would likely be so high I could never hope to have the real thing.  But, then I remembered those replica homebuilts I had read about years ago and I started reading about them again.  It was then I decided that now was the time to begin researching that project.  So, I suppose that I could say it was you who inspired me to finally begin researching homebuilts so I could one day build one.   ;D
