Carrying placards reading "You Fly, They Die" and "Carbon Kills," hundreds of people protested Sunday against the planned expansion of London's Heathrow airport.
The Camp for Climate Action organized the march to end a week-long campaign aimed at drawing attention to how aviation is affecting the environment.
Police in riot gear and truncheons clashed with protesters Sunday as they approached the headquarters of BAA, the Heathrow authority.
Small groups of protesters also headed toward the village of Sipson, where part of a new runway for the world's busiest international airport is to built, police said.
A fifth terminal is scheduled to open at the airport in March, 2008, and the government has proposed the third runway to open around 2020.
There have been traffic jams caused by police checks on a major highway leading to the airport, but Heathrow officials said air travel was not disrupted.

The news channels were covering it. The news helicopter's job was made easy as all these protestors "marching" and taking on the police were outnumbered. By 20 policemen. And the commisioner's hamster, Thomas.
If you're going to do a protest to spark nation and world wide debate, a have more than 20 people, and b, don't try and physically take on the police. They'll win.

Oh, come on. You guys are not helping people get on with their lives. Go home and do something with your own lives rather then chant rhetoric. You don't even know what you're talking about.

(Speaking about the protestors)
Blah... I hate politics...

I don't see all the fuss about aviation. I mean, there are more cars and boats than planes. I will not even bother to listen to a protester unless I know they walked to the protest.

Just wondering if the signs were made from recycled biodegradable materials.

Was the ink/paint used nontoxic and biodegradable also?

One of the protesters interviewed by the BBC said she'd come over from New York for the protests...
...how did she get here? Walk? Swim? Either a very big boat, or, more likely a horrible polluting nasty eeeeeeeeeeeeevil airliner.
Hypocrite...

Sadly, with the confrontations with the police, some of the protesters showed their true colours. They don't care, they just want to cause agro...

I wasn't questioning her reasoning, more why she found it necessary to travel the atlantic to make her point, when the transport involved would have been what she was protesting about...
