No one knows. Boeing don't know. The 797 (if it ever happens) will not appear until around 2019 going on current time between developing major types.

If I was to bet on it, I'd say they just give 'em names. The 787 Dreamliner is the first Boeing jet to my recollection that actually has a Boeing given name, the 747-8 is the Intercontinental. They might just give em names (like the comet etc) and a model number (model 200, 300, 700, 800 etc).

Jake may be right like when intel changed from numbers to names,but they did it because you cant copyright a number.
