Ramp Rats Unite!

Postby Wing Nut » Sat Jun 16, 2007 3:21 am

I'm not big on unions, but if anyone needs one, it's THESE guys!  :o  This is a real add from Craigslist...

Need one person to work a full time schedule . Responsibilities will include De-planing travellers from aircraft, unloading baggage, handling baggage claim issues, cleaning and servicing aircraft for the next day's departures.

Pay is 8.50 per hour for the first 3 months, then 9.00 an hour after probationary period.

Applicants must be able to repeatedly lift 75 pounds or more, pass a drug screening and criminal background check. Applicants must have a driver's license, must be reliable, punctual, and willing to learn. Teamwork a must.

Pay is 8.50 per hour for the first 3 months, then 9.00 an hour after probationary period. No Dental/Medical/Vision. Flight Benefits available for qualified employees.

Man, I'll bet they just can't wait for that .50 increase!  ;)

50 cent raise per hour? That's 4 Dollar on an eight hour working day. 20 Dollar in a 5 day week. That's 80 Dollar in a 4 week period. What's the problem? I wish my boss would give me an 80 Euro (in my case) raise a month. The cheap ba$tard.......

Crash ;)

PS is that 8.50 Dollar before or after taxes?

If that's that add to get people to apply; those are the conditions of employment. If a person doesn't think it's fair; they need not apply.

If a person takes the job, and finds it unfair; it's time to quit. Just like if the employer doesn't think the employee's efforts are fair; he gets let go.

Further discussion will get too political...  :)

At what airport was the listing for? Guys at our regional airport start off around 6-7 bucks an hour and I don't think they can get paid any more than 8.50.

I live in NJ, so its a fairly expensive place to live, and most unskilled jobs start you at 7.75-8.25, so the pay seems adequate to me. As for no benefits... yeah, they need to unionize, but then that airline (probably a charter) will have to raise ticket prices... But for me, the only benefit I need is pay, still on my parent's dental/medical plans :), and I'll be on the taxpayers in 5 years. :P

$8.50 an hour would be good around here...not a living wage but still better then most jobs.  Taxes are what kill it.  I make $7 an hour at the moment (.60 cent raise in a couple weeks) My last check for 76 hours, $532...after taxes...$415.08 actually ended up in my pocket...thats without owning property, no kids, not married.  $116.92 in taxes...thats just one check.  Aprox 22%.  Out of the 2 checks I have received since starting there my gross income has been $983.50.  What I actually brought in net wise...$726.84...$211.66 in taxes for 4 weeks of work, don't have insurance.  Roughly $435 every 2 weeks after taxes...not even close to a living wage :-/  And the more you make the more they take...especially if you pull overtime >:(  We see nothing from it either :-X

Then you get CEOs who sit on their arse and get paid millions...welcome to the world :P

Actually, you will see about half of that tax back, eventually. (assuming social security is still around by the time I'm 65)

But yeah, taxes are out of hand. There should just be one tax level for all income levels. If everyone pays 15% of their wages in income tax, everyone is out the same proportion. As opposed to the way it is now, where higher wealths have higher taxes, but can afford lawyers to find loopholes to get their taxes down...

Ponder this (in the U.S.)...

What comes out of your paycheck (federal/state/local income tax. FICA and Medicare) is just the begining. Then there is...

What comes out of your paycheck (federal/state/local income tax. FICA and Medicare) is just the begining. Then there is...  property tax, sales tax, gas/alcohol/tobacco/road-use/licenses & fees...

...............and if you're lucky enough to save some of that already taxed income; any interest it earns is taxed.......   And if you work and save REALLY hard, and end up with a decent estate, a good chunk of that (already taxed several times) estate will be taken by the government when you die..

:( ::)

Not to mention the proposed user fees and increased aviation fuel taxes.  >:(

Also not to mention the user fees, taxes and license fees built into the products we buy...

When all said and done, about 50% of every dollar earned ends up in the hands of politicians...

That's a good thing, isn't it? The whole purpose of government was to take our money while giving us nothing in return. Only in dealings with private companies do you actually supposed to get something in return for your money.
