I have a school project and need help. we need to design a paper airplane that could fly. it has to go far and be sterdy. i was thinking of a delta wing design. would anyone help me on this. please include instructions on how to make.

this is what i got after 2min of folding paper. i was going for an F4 phantom design. Any suggestions will be welcomed. it flew a good 5-9 ft before spinning out.

Ughhhh paper airplanes...  :-?  I know what will make you win just go something plane and simple, i.e. long with a short wing span. Kinda like a dart you throw it and it has a little lift but the speed it travels is where you will gain your distance. The airplane has to be built perfect though and throw it at a 25 degree angle. lol..



Or just make something simple like this design, even this will give you some chance at distance.



It's kinda smart to ask ppl about the idea on this, but since this is a class project it's best to try and figure it out on yourself..

Remember
long design=Stable/Fast
Short=Unstable/Slow

Those are the variables with distance and how hard to throw it! 8-)

ok, this is a lame drawing, but this variant worked well for me in getting some distance...it's quite stable. We used to put a wood toothpick in the nose to make it a little more vicious.

Looks sort of like an HL-10.

I know the best design...

Take a sheet of paper.  Hold it landscape (the 11.5 inch on the top).  Fold it over near the bottom, but leave about a quarter of an inch or so on the bottom.  Do this again until its about half the size it was before (so its 4 inches tall).  Then, roll it into a circle and slide the ends together nice and tight.  Throw it like a football.  If you did it right, and if you threw it right, then it will go far, fast, and straight.

You cant beat concorde....long range, fast and it looks pretty;

i have a canard equipped delta wing that i build... people are sometimes amazed at how straight and level it flies... it routinely sails along across the length of a class room with ease in a fairly straight line. you can even cut the canards to add small flaps which can be adjusted to correct for any undesired turning... or can be adjusted to actually MAKE it turn if you want to.

Don't bother with folding the paper.  Instead get some fairly heavy card stock, some good (thin) glue, and an X-acto knife.  Build a real plane with proper CG and center of lift geometries and control surfaces.  It'll likely fly much better than anything you can simply fold from a sheet of paper.

Oh, and for the speeds you're looking at think of copying something like a Cessna instead of an F4.  It'll fly much more stabily.  If you decide to go super-sonic then we'll talk (and I don't want to meet the guy who throws it in a dark alley).  :)

So......let me get this straight.........you have a school project and it requires that a free flight, flying machine be designed, produced and flown by you (but you are asking us at SimV to do the designing for you ?) and will we be getting credit, acknowledgement or royalties for said assistance........?
For you to collect academic credit for what we produce for you, really isn't the aim of this project.......

I don't think you can afford the design fees or the royalties for the flight of such a craft........the numbers are in six figure amounts for design but the royalties for flight......ah yes, the ROYALTIES......
Lets start working out the details with a mediator.....bring on the coffee, it's gonna take a long night of bickering back and forth to get this one nailed......I have a new house, cars, and pool to start paying for......

not asking you for the design just giveing me ideas. i have already made my own that is based on your ideas.

I to had a paper airplane contest in class a few years ago, the best designs had ballistic coefficents (they were heavily wieght as the compitition was for distance)

i fly a modded version of the floating airplane, once in a while i get a good one that flys great! most of the time the just do pretty neat tricks 8-)

Look up the 'Eagle'. I tell you as a paper airplane fan that it will fly (indoors) straighter than any other paper plane.

PS: Also there is the 'World Record Paper Airplane' that can probably also be found  online, but I never had the same luck with that one that I did with the Eagle
