Nellis was busy today, alright. I saw the following aircraft take to the skies in a period of just 90 minutes...
1 B2, 2 B1s, 2 KC-135s, 2 C-130s, 1 A-10 and 5 each F-15s in a group followed by 4 each F-16s in a another flight, two of something that looked like those SleepyCat Jaguars and after all that, things with the F-15s and F-16s began to get so hectic I could not chronicle them. I saw an EA-6B Prowler come in as I was fueling at the Petro at around 1230. I was out near Creech AFB at KINS when I saw a Blackhawk chopper covering the skies to and fro...
Those B2s are so cool. They are so slender in cross section and they make a low-volume, low-frequency rumble when they depart that it was hard for me to discern their direction and location, even though I was looking right at it as it left. There were four of them setting on the ramp at 1030 when I got into viewing position at the intersection of E Centennial Blvd and N Hollywood Blvd, right where the Petro is. I did some paperwork which diverted my attention for about 15 minutes. When I again looked at the ramp through my 10X binocs, two of the B2s were gone. No doubt one of them was the one I saw leave. I have no idea where the other one went...
There were also two other aircraft with the engines in the wingroots, like the old Dehavilland Comet had, but I do not know what they were.
On to flying at a much lower altitude, now. Carroll Shelby has his shop right there and he has had the roll-up doors open for the past few trips. I looked in there today as I drove past and I saw multiple 2007 Mustangs in there getting the Shelby treatment. Seven of them, all black with wide white or silver racing stripes were setting outside, awaiting their turn under his wrenches. Last week I drove by to see a drop-door trailer unloading brand-new, all-original aluminum Cobra bodies. Shelby is making them again. The skin is straight out of 1967 but the guts are all 2007. I saw a thing on TV about the new Cobra a few years ago. It was designed on a computer, built right there and Carroll himself drove the prototype around Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I think you can pick one up for about $100,000, give or take a few bucks. There is a guy who must have one because I see him racing up and down E Centennial Blvd in it every so often, past the dairy where I deliver my raw milk.
I was out on US95 on the way home and I saw a Cessna 152 or some other light GA aircraft following the road, going south, near the Cold Creek state prison. It was white with red trim and flying at about 500 feet. I saw no markings to indicate it might be the Nevada Highway Patrol, so I figured I was cool. I did happen to be traveling at a high rate of speed through there...
That is all I saw today. I think Red Flag may be going on, but I don't know. Maybe it's just another day at Nellis with our brave aviators on the job, keeping us safe and free...
