Mistake at KMCO

Postby garymbuska » Wed Nov 01, 2006 12:13 pm

How many read about the incident at Orlando (KMCO) that involved a Conteniental B757 landing on a taxiway instead of the runway. Talk about a goof  :o Conteniental said both pilots have been grounded and are helping with the investigation as to how that happened. No one was injured in the incident.
But how in the world can a seasoned pilot mistake a taxiway for a runway? :P
below is a copy of the article

There also were no injuries Saturday when the Continental Flight from Orlando, Fla., landed in the wrong place. Taxiways often have planes, vehicles or personnel on them.

The FAA had not interviewed the pilot and co-pilot as of Tuesday, but Continental Airlines Inc. said both pilots had been grounded.

"The pilots have been temporarily removed from flying duties and are assisting the company in analyzing the incident," Continental spokeswoman Mary Clark said.

All navigational equipment and lights at the airport were working, said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Authorities in Washington also were investigating a runway mishap. Officials said a Juneau, Alaska-bound Alaska Airlines jet took off from the wrong runway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Monday morning.

The takeoff occurred normally, so there were no injuries, officials said.

man that is a serious error... im not sure how that could have happened but there is a reason for everything. As always we must give these guys the benifit of the doubt... they were the only two people in the cockpit when it happened.

when a good like this occurs most companies will send you in for mandatory drug testing, ground you for the duration of the investigation - with pay - depending on severity of the case.

All i can say for these guys is that i hope they were close to retirement anyway.

that was a potential disaster.

How is that that none of the instruments on board warned them that they were out of glide path, may be they had taking things for granted, and thats when accidents happen.

Maybe it was like the incident at KEWR... in that case, the runway in use (29) has no ILS, so the approach was visual (although at night). There is a VASI, but...

It's the same incident. The flight was from Orlando (KMCO) not to it.
