Buchon and Hurricane move...

Postby F3Hadlow » Wed Sep 27, 2006 3:25 am

The RACo at Breighton in Yorkshire has sold it's Hurricane and Buchon to new owners based at Duxford, from realaero.com....

Two of Breighton's popular airshow performers bade farewell to the airfield on Tuesday 26th September, moving to their new home at Duxford, Cambridgeshire, from where it is anticipated they will continue to be displayed, by their new owners, on the airshow circuit.

The Hurricane (RCAF5589) arrived at Breighton in 1997 and formed part of RAC's 'Black and Blue' duo with Vickers Supermarine Spitfire PR XI (PL965). When the Spitfire left Breighton for its sabatical in the US, the Hurricane continued as a very popular solo display item with Breighton's Airfield Manager Brian Brown in the driving seat.

Despite its recent arrival on the airshow scene, the Breighton 'ME 109'/Buchon had been resident at the airfield almost as long as the Hurricane. A long term restoration, (the majority of which had been carried out 'in-house') the aircraft flew for the first time in many years during the early part of this years airshow season, its eagerly anticipated display debut being at Duxford's Flying Legends warbird airshow.

The Real Aeroplane Company has made no secret of the fact that its future lies with pre-war era aviation and the revenue raised by the sale of the two fighters will be used to further enhance the collection in that particular direction. The Company has been looking for suitable projects to fill the spaces left by the Hurricane and Buchon and tentative steps have already been made which could see an exciting new restoration project heading to Breighton in the very near future - watch this space!

I hadn't realised that. At least they won't be going abroad. Not yet anyway. It won't actually make that much difference to their display work.

PL965 was also the famous pink Spitfire. It is now back in PR Blue & part of Peter Teichman's Hangar 11 collection at North Weald. http://www.hangar11.co.uk/spitfire.html

Good to hear that they are staying here for now at least - although I believe the new owner may be from the states.
