Smoke is usually produced by introducing diesel oil into the exhaust. The colour can be changed by mixing dye with the diesel. This works on both piston & jet engined aircraft. http://www.raf.mod.uk/reds/dyeteam.html

Some display aircraft are fitted with special smoke generators. These are like small gas turbine engines & work on the same principle.

Here's a shot of the Sukhoi Su 26 taken at a recent air display. Note the smoke is coming from the engine exhaust stubs.

The smoke system is completely separate & only fitted to display aircraft. It has no effect on the performance of the aircraft. Read the article from the link I posted in my first reply.

No but I have worked on the smoke systems. I've also been to a lot of air displays over the years.

I think that nowdays they use vegetable oil or other non-petroleum oil due to environmental concerns. At least they did so at the Indianpolis airshow.

Not sure what the military display teams use. It says diesel oil on the Red Arrows site. I've heard they use baby oil on the smaller piston-engined types.
