If that's true.. if they took off from the shorter of the two runways at KLEX, it's probably the cause. Runway 08/26 is only 3,500 feet long. According to the manufacture's website..

CRJ200 ER
FAR take-off field length (SL, ISA) at MTOW

5,800 ft

I was just about to post the same figures. However if the pilot did try to take off on this runway, I would have though that it would be the boundary fence that he wound hit. 3500 feet is only just over half the required length and with a full payload.....

The CRJ has some known problems, such as uncommanded roll spoiler deployment (experienced that first hand) and elevator trim runaway. They are also very sensitive to C of G movement. I know that having nearly put one on its tailskid whilst changing the APU. However, as usual we are all guilty of it...........Speculation.

I just looked up the airport on google earth-I can see how easily the mistake could be made when it's dark.  Very sad :(

Yes it's confermed that the  Pilot attemted take off from the wrong, much shorter runway for whatever reason.

As I said, when you look at the runway configuration, it was a rather easy mistake to make if one was just the least bit careless in the dark.

since the short runway is unlit I find it difficult to believe that mistake could be made in the dark. You'd have to be blind to not tell the differance.

To both Craig and Arnimon-far, far worse mistakes have been made by more experienced pilots.  It's just how it goes.
