USA Today: Air Travel at its Safest

Theres an article on the cover of USA Today today about how air travel safety is at an all time high.  I didnt read the whole article,  but from 200 to 2005 the probability of an individual dying in a crash is 1 in 22.8 million.

Id rather fly than drive any day

They say flying is safer than driving anyway. There's no risk of colliding with an SUV in midair.

LOL!  I flew first class once going to KFLL, and Coach on the way back.  Just one thing: First class we had a really tasty chicken sandwich with potato salad on nice plates and fancy silverwear.  In coach, tiny cold turkey sandwich in a plastic box.  First class RULES!

Yes... I got to go first class once, to Jamaica. Can't remember what aircraft... I was in the very first row, and the bulkhead in front of me was covered with carpeting up to about 4 feet... I had my shoes off (sandals) and my bare feet up on the wall for a little while...mimosa in hand... ahhhh...(FO: "snif, snif... kee-ripes! What's that smell? Captain: "Better deploy the oxygen masks...")

The only problem with 1st class is that you're up front. Not that I worry too much about it, but in the event of a crash or even an overrun, you're better off farther back. That's my consolation when I'm crammed back in "steerage" trying to carve a piece of rubber meatloaf with a cheap plastic knife, while Damien the Devil-Boy kicks the back of my seat over and over: "Those fools up in 1t class are doomed... doomed!"

I forget if its the FAA, NTSB or DOT that has it but one of those has the actual numbers published online. General Aviation crashes are at a 10 year low. Still in the hundreds of fatalities a year though.

Jake, what airline was that? I flew Lufthansa last week and yesterday. On the flight over there we were served a very hot dinner (almost burnt myself on the tin), with real metal knives and sporks, and a cold sandwich for breakfast. On the flight back we got a hot dinner and a hot lunch, no silverware for the lunch though. No food on connecting flights either, but they were only an hour long.

See... thats Lufthansa, they are probably still civil to people. All of the american air carriers have gotten crazy with the "We are going to stuff you in like cattle because thats what you are! Food? What do you mean you want food? We are not made of food, heres a pack of nasty trail mix and a ladle full of soda. Oh we are here... GET OFF THE PLANE! NOW!!!!" In america its a traumatic experience flying an airline, akin to being stuck in a pile of rubble after a major earthquake but at the end of a flight they dont rush you off to the hospital they just kick you out the door and remind you that the long security lines (which are the reason for your now flat feet) were for your safety and convinience.

I've never flown internationaly.  Longest flight was Northwest from DTW-SEA.  Lasagnia was disgusting but the chicken on the return trip was acualy pretty decent.

Havent flown since 2003.  Will be leaving for Taiwan in 25 days though  I hear Malaysia Airlines is pretty decent.  They had better be good since they will have me crammed in the economy class of a 747 for 13 hours and 45 minutes  Hoping for a row towards the back by myself...but odds are that aint happening

As for US airlines.  I've flown 3...Continental, Northwest, TWA.  Northwest was by far the best.  TWA was horrible.  But then again Ill be flying American from FWA-DFW-LAX and LAX-ORD-FWA.  The very airline that bought out TWA  YAY...Hopefully the service has changed a little since 99

yeah, i usually fly coach, and i like the food alot..not much difference from 1st and coach, they had boxes, but real knives and forks..but they was hot..breakfast was good too =P my flight from Dallas to Gatwick on wednesday is a dinner and breakfast flight..im looking forward to it 250% =P

yeah last year I flew Delta to Atlanta and then on to Italy and the service was terrible on the flight from Portland to atlanta, we had to pay onboard for our food and all we got was a cold sandwich.  this really sucked because at that point none of us had more than ten bucks american, on us, for dinner in Atlanta, the rest of our money was euros, so no one could get food service.

I guess every1 has heard of the case study by American Airlines, they used, if i remember rightly, one less olive in every meal and saved $40000 in a year. Now 40k, by airline standards is petty cash, but its stilla saving, and do you imagin any one who travelled with american in that year said "hey, stewardess, where's my extra olive?" I doubt they did

I flew with Singapore Airlines a few years ago and I have never experienced such amazing service with any other airline since, and Ive been on a few! From the goody pack you recieve when you board which had a tooth brush, tooth paste, a towel etc down to the gorgeous uniforms of the stewardesses I cant imagin a more pleasent way to travel for 14 hours in a metal tube.
