Yikes! I knew landing at Kai Tak was hard, but these Alitalia pilots need to renue their licences!  :o

Kai Tak Video

And the 06/06/06 must not have been a lucky day for these 747 pilots. (Be patient its at the end of the video!)

I have yet to see a clip of a landing at Kai Tak that wasn't similar... it was just not an easy place to land heavies. The terrain demanded a tricky approach and also aggravated the wind conditions.

There is nothing wrong with that Kai Tak landing. It is a difficult place to land.

Are you joking me?
Kai Tak might've been difficult but this is a school example of a bad landing...
The MD11 was just a few metres from landing on the grass.  ::)

There is this myth that every Kai Tak landing was a rollercoaster ride with severe lateral corrections to the finish, but infact most of the landings were just as smooth (notice I said landings) as every other airport.

The landings caught on videos that are circulating on the web are only the BAD ones, trust me.

When your nose is pointing 45 degrees from the end of the runway, I would say thats a horrible landing and the pilot should have gone around  ;)

Yeah, so?

By few meters you mean like 10. The aicraft didn't land on the grass so there is nothing wrong.

Erm... nope. Coming in that off center is all the reason you need to go around.  It was a dangerous landing.

Decisions are not judged based on the outcome-they are judged based on the circumstances they were made under.  It is completely irrelevent how it turns out if it was a bad decision in the first place (when we are reviewing if something was a good or bad decision at least).  This is always true, but possbly moreso in aviation than anything else. Next time they may not be so lucky.

And it was a few meters at most.

10 Metres!

Just look at Nexus's picture!

Another few inches and he would be taking out the runway lights.  :o

Kai Tak landing videos have always made me feel better about my attempts at landing jets in the sim ;D

How about his landing it is worse than the MD-11.

"I can't imagine what the crew are thinking at this point..." LOL.
I know what the ground crew is thinking: "Overtime tonight!!"

I wonder what needed to be done to make that ship airworthy again... that "arrival" must've done some serious damage to the landing gear. :P

I still don't think it's all sloppy flying; Kai Tak was no picnic; part of the reason they closed it.

I believe Kai Tak had a comparatively lower accident rate to other major airports, but I'll bet engine strikes were much higher. (an engine strike would be classified as an incident, not an accident, right?)

Keep in mind the nose of those aircraft are close to the center line, it's hard to judge how far off the centerline is the main gears are when you're 100 feet infront of them!

The crew are very well aware of how far back the mains are. After thousands of landings....wouldnt you agree? I mean they surely have no problems taxiing the darned thing around. (ok maybe not exactly the same thing  ;D )
It's like driving a long vehicle, when you get used to it, you "know" when to start the turn because it becomes a second nature.
