Why does it look like he's performing a side-step manouever? (despite no runway to step to)
He corrects his lateral alignment with the runway rather late?
Is that a standard procedure or did that pilot just make a poor job dealing with the crosswind?
Nice slamdunk, tho

James says the pilot was making an s-bend approach to allow traffic to depart on the runway.

Now THAT was cool

James says the pilot was making an s-bend approach to allow traffic to depart on the runway.
That would probably be right; as the camera follows the 737 over the treeline and watches it land, you can just see another aircraft departing the airport.

Is that common? I'd think the FAA would object to something like that.

Thanks for clearing that out Craigy! :)
I kinda had the feeling something weird was going on, looked so awkward, like "oh darn it, there's is the runway I was looking for" ;D
Chris_F, as long as the manouver is perfectly safe and doesnt push the flight envelope, I see no problem with that...but you never know with the FAA :)
BTW who the heck is James? ???

I was on one flight that executed a maneuver kinda like this. The pilot ended up aborting the landing and we went around for a second go. For the longest time I couldn't figure out why he approached the way he did, but now I guess I know.
The last couple seconds before abort were really interesting. The pilot used a TON of roll to try to regain the centerline. I could've sworn we were going to gid a wing tip in to the ground. :) Of course it's awfully hard to get a feel for the attitude/elevation of a plane while looking out the side window. I'm sure it wasn't nearly as nasty as it seemed from seat 13D.

Well, James is flyboy's real name. I think Craig might be a tad confused. This is the comment with the vid.
confused? no.
James sent this video to me via messenger, I mistook it for the canarsey approach into JFK without reading the description, J then proceeded to correct me by telling me
