Boeing 737-xxx ... what is it all about?

when browsing trough airliners.net, I've noticed a lot of aircraft, for ex. the Boeing 737 has a lot of different number-notations.

I know about the differences between let's say a 737-200 and a 737-900NG... but what are the planes designated as B737-8as; B737-8K2; B737-548

What are the last digits about?

I've been told it's the airlines custom code.

For instance, let's say Lufthansa's 737s want all leather interior and plasma screens on each seat at monkey-class, then their 737-700s get the name 737-756.

And British airways want fabric seats and only monitors on business class on their 737's, then their 737-700s get a different code cause they're not similar to the Lufthansa 737-700's, let's say they get 737-794.

That's what I've been told..

*Non of the numbers are true, just examples.. :P

It's true what Ecko says.

Notice that some airlines 737's share the same company codes, despite being in service for just that specific airline.
VARIG, Malev, Air Astana and Virgin Blue Airlines all have 737-7Q8's in their fleets  :)

Happen to notice that one of our aircraft is a B737-8K2 last night. All I can tell you is that the interior is completly different to our company "standard" fit.
