747 Odd Landing

Postby Chris_F » Fri Jan 20, 2006 10:40 pm

Just poking around on the web and found this.  Anyone know the story (is it real)?

I've heard of crabbing in during a cross wind but this looks rediculous...

Landing at Kai Tak can be a lot of fun. :)

It's real, just one of the more extreme landings at Kai Tak...but they were all challenging.

Can't see the vid, (site dosn't support hotlinking) but I'm assuming you're referring to one of the most famous aviation shorts of all time, the KLM (I think) Crosswind Kai Tak landing.

It wasn't uncommon for planes to have engine strikes landing on that runway... ;) (there's no story behind it, just a hefty crosswind landing)

It's a Korean 747.
And FYI all, Kai Tak had a better safety record than most airports had at the time when it shut down.  :-*

Kudos to the pilot for recovering the situation. Very smooth turns. There have been some crazy Kai Tak landings indeed. I saw one when i was there in 1996, a Cathay 747-400 landed at almost 45 degrees to the centre line and had to correct it on the ground.
Where's the challenge in landing with wheels?
