Its being funded by the Great Britain's DFID, who also funded Gerald's Airstrip in Montserrat recently, it will be completed in 2010, and will serve the South Atlantic British Crown Colony of Saint Helena. The runway will be 8200ft in length, capable of allowing Airbus A320s, or Boeing 737s. The airport will be used for flights to Ascension Island to the north, and Windhoek, Namibia to the east.

Hehe, I like the livery:

Reminds me of another airline, even the country sticker is still on there! Air Berlin pawned.

The Proposed Livery with the proposed aircraft - 737-BBJ. These are planned to serve the island with routes to Georgetown, Ascension Island, as well as Stanley in the falklands, London, Paris and possibly Cape Town. I never knew the 737 could do that!!

Excavations for geological research and runway foundations.

The new airport will be located on Prosperous Bay Plain - on the eastern coast of the island. It will incorporate a total runway length of 2250 metres, sufficient to support safe operation of long-haul jet aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800. Pending an international tendering process, the initial cost estimates for the work will not be released for commercial reasons.

The project will include technical advice to help establish regular scheduled air services and to support St Helena in reaping the economic benefits of air access for the island. Increased tourism and inward investment is expected to follow the much improved access arrangements.

UK assistance to St Helena (pop 3900) is currently about

Apparently the 737-BBJs will be used to London & Paris as well??? A lot of stopovers I suppose, as I doubt the 737 could reach it on one tank of fuel!! ;D

BBJ has less cargo space because there is a huge extra fuel tank there... so it can do that nonstop
