Just out of interest (cos I like knowing pointless bits of information  :) 0.  When does a Captain switch on the fasten seatbelt signs?  (on a commercial flight)

Traditionally before take-off and landing, always whilst taxiing and during turbulence or other less than fun weather phenomena

Sorry, I realise I didn't word the question properly, I mean what altitude etc do the lights come on go off (assuming fair weather).  When does take-off end and landing commence as far as seatbelts are concerned

In my personal experience, the fasten seatbelt signs generally stay on for the entire climb and are turned off about halfway through the descent, right before they start manuevering.

I also heard that they always have to be on below 10,000' AGL, but that could be false.

Again the weather is a factor. Also airlines advise you to keep your seatbelt on when sitting even if the sign isn't lit.....

I've always experienced the same thing, it seems during a descent they just come on when the Captain decides it necessary (or remembers  ;D) . 10 000' sounds good, though I seem to remember hearing somewhere something about 15'000..

There is no black and white rule rule regarding this matter. Whenever I travel they turn off the seatbelt sign at the same time they turn off the landing lights (10,000)

During descents, I've experienced pilots turning on the seatbelts signs when passing thru 10.000, or when transition from std to QNH.
If you leave the seat belt switch in "auto" in an airbus or Boeing, the seat belt sign will be lit whenever you begin to deploy  flaps(slats).
