Next checkpoint will be Barnegat Light and another inlet...






And there it is... not that I'm surprised. I am making pretty good time, though, even with a slight headwind.






There's a break in the cloud deck here... suddenly 715 and I are bathed in brilliant sunshine.






Barnegat marks the north end of Long Beach Island, where my family used to spend two weeks every summer when I was a kid. Never seen it from the air before, but I guess it looks much the same, only with more houses.





I'm pretty sure the house my folks rented every summer was somewhere around this part of the island, on the bay side. I remember walking just down the street a little to play on the dunes... eh, hard to tell from up here, and anyway, it's been over thirty years...

Would most of those homes in your last shot be retired folks?
The reason I ask is in most of your shots I see very little industry.
Or do folks drive a good distance to work?

Long Beach Island has been a vacation destination for as long as I can remember... what little industry there is caters to the summer crowd: restaurants, hotels, etc. Bet it's practically deserted in the winter., as the majority of homeowners rent out the houses as opposed to living there year-round. There were a few retirees there when I was a kid- nice for them in the summer, but it ain't Florida- it's cold, wet, and snowy in the winter.
I guess there might be year-round working folks who commute to the mainland: there's a causeway in the middle, and Atlantic City and Toms River are pretty big towns within a reasonable drive.

An interesting little coastline...
