These photographers get soooooooo close to the runaway that I can only dream of !!! I was wondering if they have special clearance or something like that.

Thanks to whoever can shed light on this.

Unless the photographer works out on the runways, I cant believe they get that close. A very good zoom lens maybe?

That or he was sitting in some sort a an aeroplane on the taxiway.
He could also be an airport employee.

Amazing what you can do with a powerful zoom lens. You only have to watch the TV cricket or golf coverage to see what they're capable of.

The angle is so low, though, that it seems for it to be a zoom shot, the photog would have to be in a hole in the ground... maybe not, but then there's the perspective: makes it look like a wide-angle shot. I could see a photographer getting permission to shoot that close for any number of reasons; might even be a remotely-operated camera for safety reasons. But I'm really not sure.

I seem to recall this photographer was some form of airport worker. The perspective is definatly more a wide angle than a zoom. the other option is to email the photographer. They usually are willing to help where they can.

My guess would be that he's either an airport worker (maybe in the runway FOD sweeping vehicle), or a photographer either working for or with permission of the airport (and hitching a ride with the said vehicle or similar...) :)

searching the anet forums, it appears he just has airside clearance, and sells his slides.
or a photographer either working for or with permission of the airport
which seems the most likely.

In a past picture he said "thank to the LAX fire crew for allowing me to take these pictures" or something like that.

He takes some great shots, most of which are viewed the most.

For the everage Joe, You can not get that close at KJFK!

Remember a few months back I was there and posted some shots. I was on the roof of the parking garage and was asked to stop taking photos. I was then questioned as to what I was doing. I said "Plane spotting". The police officer asked for some ID. I gave him my license and AOPA Card. He told me to leave.

Whoever took that has clearance and used a wide angle. Even with a zoom you could not do that at JKF, trust me!

At LAX you have some good spotting places were you can come close. Maybe he just used a regular lens (I think a wide angle instead of a zoom lens, but that doesn't matter) and cropped it very hard. The photo is only 1000 pixels wide so if he was using an 8mp 20D, he could end up like this if he was using a 17-40mm for instance.
Just my thoughts.
