Alrot seriously hit the nail on the head, this really is the season for crashes  :(

A helicopter with 12 passengers and two crew has crashed in the Baltic Sea about three miles from the Estonian capital, Tallinn.

The Sikorsky 76 was on a scheduled flight from Tallinn to Helsinki, Finland, says the Estonian rescue service.

The aircraft's tail section was sticking out of the water when rescuers arrived, but the rest of the aircraft was submerged, said Mati Raidma, head of the rescue service.

"The rescue mission is going on," he said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. A storm in the area caused operators to cancel the fast ferries between Tallinn and Helsinki.

Finnish news agency STT, citing Estonian Embassy officials in Helsinki said the passengers were six Finns, four Estonians and two US citizens.

Later eyewitness reports suggested the entire helicopter had sunk and rescuers found only scattered wreckage on the surface.

"We couldn't find anybody, only debris," said Estonian maritime rescue service spokesman Aivar Muriks, adding that divers were searching for survivors.

It's quite normal. If you look in aviation magazines you'll see how many there are, both military and civil. These are just the high profile (certainly the A340 and ATR-42) ones that the press can cover (show live coverage and photos easily)...

It's summertime in these areas, also... high density altitude, lots of convective activity, heat fatigue, etc. The middle of winter has the same effect, with: icing, high winds, etc.

I'm lucky I don't own a plane, I guess. I feel bad for those people, though.

Its because of the AF A340 crash that your hearing about these others. The press can run it for a few weeks, try to scare the public into thinking air travel isnt safe and so on.

This last weekend alone was quite a crash-happy weeknd up here!  Thursday there was a Midair collision in Renton )between a 152 and a Beaver... the 152 crashed into a school killing the pilot, and the Beaver managed to land with some mangled floats), and that Friday three people in a Cessna 172 had to ditch in Lake Washington... all were OK in that one.

The chopper was a Sikorsy H-67 ( ithink). It was run by a company called Copterline, which has a helicopter service between Helsinki-Tallin, sorta a fast route for Finns to go buy booze cheap and other stuff from Estonia. Anyway, 1 of the pilots is missing and I think that they are saying now that a rotor blade may have broke in flight. Anyway that's been big news here.
