Varies from company to company, and prices also depend on aircraft type.

It's also usually cheaper if you pay for it all at once, rather than pay per lesson.  There are companies that will finance your flight lessons too.  I'm not sure if this will help you (depending on your location)  but www.pilotfinance.com is a great resource.

Hi Woodlouse you are probably right about Ocean Yacht Racing although some of the pilots and crews that compete at the Reno Air Races yearly are probably right up there as far as expenses go with the yachting folks.
I think it would be an interesting comparison if we could find info on it.

When you do decide to take lessons try taking them on your holidays and when the weather is fine.
You will find your progress will be much smoother especially with less poor weather days.
You might also find you will save a little money as you are not having to re-book lessons all the time...that is when an instructor will usually spend time going over the previous lesson with you as there has been a time lapse.
Commit yourself fully to obtaining your licence in the quickest time you can...on holidays one can fly several times a day where you might be down to one hour a week and going to school or trying to work at the same time.

Its too expensive.  A lot of what goes into my hours is what i've saved up all these years.  Pretty much all the money i made last summer is gone from this.  I wish I won the lottery...  :(

Somehow I feel the yachting will be far ahead. Just remember, that multi million pount boat is only the tip of a very large iceberg.

Yeah but comparing the PPL to yacht speed racing is like saying the airplanes I have on my shelf are a museum.

It's all relative, what if you privately own a 777?

Then you'd have much more than your PPL.  You'd have a multi rating, a jet rating, plus more than likely a commercial and ATP rating...all ignoring the fact that if you owned a 777, you probably wouldn't be too bothered by the $5,000 to get your PPL.
