A Mi-8 helicopter belonging to the Ministry of Internal Affairs crash landed 20km south-east of Khankala in southern Russia in the republic of Chechnya. The incident occured at about 15:00 local time (16:00 Moscow Time). The helicopter was carrying out a scheduled flight when the pilot reported problems with the engine. Shortly after a very rough crash landing 3 helicopters arrived at the scene, one rescue and two military. Two servicemen are in hospital with heavy injuries, but their condition is not life threatening. There were 12 people on board at the time of the crash.
The black boxes have been delivered to Khankala this evening, there was no fire after the crash and authorities will scan the data from the recorders today and results will be published tomorrow morning. It is believed that the helicopter suffered an engine failure prior to the crash.
