Autobrakes?

Are autobrakes supposed to slow you down in the descent or when you have touched down on the runway and are braking?

I think autobrakes activate once the aircraft is on the runway. So the pilot doesn't have to use the brakes, which could be quite hard on a large plane. ;)
They operate in three intensities, but I think 1 or 2 is normally used.
Someone may correct me on this.

Eskimo is correct.
Autobrakes are wheelbrakes that are monitored by a system that maintains a specific brake pressure.
It senses deceleration rate and applies brake pressure according to selected rate on the panel. (1,2.3, MAX etc)
