London City Open Day

Postby xFLAMESx » Wed Jun 30, 2004 6:13 pm

This Saturday (I know it's short notice) there is a free open day at LCY with a couple of air display slots.
Planes will apparently include a Corsair, Spitfire, Hurricane, Sukhoi (doesn't state which one), the Cosmic Wind??? and the Tiger Club Turbulent Team plus more.

Gates open at 2pm and displays are at 3:15 and 4:45.
Should be good.

[glb]Thanx. Carl[/glb]

Thanks for heads-up Carl. This should be a good do. ;)

If you intend going it's best to turn up early. It might be more popular than they bargained for. ::) ;)

PS. The Cosmic Wind "Minnow" is a tiny pylon racer. They used to be very popular at one time. I imagine this one belongs to a member of the Tiger or Turbulent Club.

I'm not sure any of these is actually a Cosmic Wind. Don't expect this on Saturday.

Wow :o Did that shrink in the wash? ;D

I'm not sure of the top speed. Being so tiny they look faster than they are.

I just discovered that the Cosmic Wind aircraft were designed and built by a group of Lockheed employees. This might have been a development of the tiny plane I mentioned seeing at the Gatwick Air Pageant in 1949. This one was even smaller with no room for a cockpit. The pilot was strapped along the top of the fuselage in a head-first prone position. :o

Last time I saw the Cosmic wind I believe it was being flown by one of the Fighter Collection pilots at Duxford, who also has close links with the Tiger Club.Off the top of my head it's green with gold(?) trim and called Ballerina. I think the late, great Neil Williams had an engine failure in it once during some late 60s early 70s aerobatic champs...

Charlie (I'm on leave - its great!)

I'm not going in - i'm gonna sit dockside and try and take a few decent shots 8)
Mark - I'll try and get the Spitfire on camera - but i'll probably be drooling over the Corsair ;D

(Cosmic Wind) Off the top of my head it's green with gold(?) trim and called Ballerina.

Yup well sort of a dull-yellow/gold trim.
Wasn't a bad show actually, I got the chance to stand next to "Ballerina" and well, I've seen bigger AIRFIX models ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I was a bit dissapointed - the Hurricane couldn't make it :( So what did the genius organsiers do?

Replace it with a Curtis Kittyhawk 8)

Pity about the weather. If it's anything like it is down here it's a tad draughty around the old lugholes. Not really ideal for an air show.
They should have known better than to hold it anywhere near the date of that other event at Wimbledon. ::)

I look forward to seeing your photos. Ballerina used to be a regular visitor to Shoreham in the "good ol' days". Does it still have curved prop blades? I always thought that looked rather natty. ;)

I think so - even when standing next to her - I was still staring at the Corsair *wipes drool from chin* ;D ;D ;D
WINDY! have you ever seen an Extra try and take-off into a 35Km/h head-wind? ;D
Loops weren't a problem i'll tell ya that ;D
I had trouble keeping stable so most of the pics are probably blurry :(
