Can anyone shed some light as to what exactly they are around an airport?

Class B, C, and D Airspace are designated for that controlled airspace around airports where there are minimum requirements for communications and/or equipment and pilot certification.

Basically, Class B airspace exists at the nations busiest airports; Class C and D are for airports with operational control towers (Class C also having radar approach and a certain number of IFR ops. or passenger emplanements).

and...around an airport you have the CTR zone which stands for Control. outside the CTR you have TMA (terminal manoeuvring area)...and if you go further, you'll find airways. they first two are located in concentric circles around an airport.  ;)

In Canada you will find that information in the A.I.P. CANADA (AERONAUTICAL INFORMATION PUBLICATION) published by Transport Canada.  There are monthly updates as well.

Canada Flight Supplement which is published usually every ninety days and may be superseded by NOTAMS is published under the authority of NAV CANADA AND THE CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE STAFF.

Transport Canada has many sites you can visit and obtain all the information you will require.
