Smallest?

Postby ozzy72 » Fri Dec 29, 2017 9:09 am

Strange question from my son earlier today and I'd value your opinions, we were watching a program on planes and it showed loading Land Rovers onto a C-130 via the tail ramp and David asked what is the smallest plane that can carry a car?
I think it might be the Shorts Skyvan. Anyone?

The Antonov AN14 is one of my favourites:

It depends what kind of car I suppose: stretched limo, matchbox car, railroad boxcar?

A radio contrlloed model aircraft could carry a plastic Hornby OO scale mini - I can vouch for that!

Just some B.S. to bash your kid over the head with when he asks stupid questions!

Miles M.57 Aerovan? http://atomictoasters.com/2012/06/miles-aerovan-cheap-hauler/

The Skyvan was based on the H.D.M 105, an updated version of the Aerovan with a Hurel-Dubois high aspect-ratio wing. https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=15981.0

I found this video of the prototype Aerovan with a car being loaded. https://youtu.be/0Xs3BESEQTk

There were still a few around when I first worked at Shoreham, including the H.D.M 105 prototype. Sadly I wasn't interested in photography at the time.
This is the Hurel-Dubois HD-32 that visited FG Miles Ltd at Shoreham in 1955 when I was still at school.

I remember spotting it in the circuit & racing over to the airfield on my bike to see this strange machine.
The high-aspect ratio wing design would be adapted for the H.D.M 105.
