Interesting indeed, I've seen footage of it on one of the Farnborough videos, quite spooky hearing it go past without the roar of the mighty Merlins.
Cheers

How good would it have looked with 4? There were a few piston/turbo prop test beds of early jets; the all jet Tay Vicount and the Nene Viking spring to mind. Avro went a step further with the Ashton which was developed itself from the Tudor, a passenger derivative based on the Lincoln, itself a development of the Lanc.

I'd not heard of this one either. I've seen a lot of these test-beds & particularly remember the Tyne Lincoln display at the Farnborough Air Show many years ago. Here it is with all four Merlins feathered. Very impressive indeed.

The Tyne was a bit of a best of an engine. I'd not realised that its 4000hp+ output came out of a more reasonable 2500hp specification! You can see how the Lincoln managed on one!
