FAA Releases VOR Decommissioning Policy

The FAA formally published its policy including the criteria for selecting hundreds of VOR navigation aids that will be decommissioned over the next decade. The policy, released today, further outlines the process for decommissioning. The agency has selected 308 VORs to be decommissioned as the agency moves to a satellite-based navigational system.

Industry groups, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, protested, arguing that a larger VOR minimum operational network is necessary to serve as a backup in case there should be a widespread GPS satellite outage.

It doesn't seem long ago that NDB's lost their popularity....>>>>

I have always treated them with much affection in my Flight Sims, so much so, that I have installed them in many of my favourite aerodromes and airstrips to guide me back home on my instruments...the little yellow needle!

At least we still have all our old Radio Beacons in our Flight Sims!

Paul....and a Bendix-King.... ...!

We've promised so much to so many, that we need to take away money from somewhere to give to all those that we've promised free whatever.

And as we now have world peace we don't need no stinkin' backup system.

I mean, really! Who would want to mess up the GPS system?

Anyway. I, at least, love the fun of old fashion navigation in it's many variations. I've even tried navigation by road. <<q

The phasing out of VORs has been in the works for a long time... and don't worry, they won't be using that money for social programs or whatever, they are pouring truckloads of money into NextGen. More for ATC than nav, and very dependent on computer networks (which we all know are completely immne to any sort of tampering), but at least it's ground-based, LOL.

Speaking of "ground based systems" back-up....
