Whoooooops,,,,, I did it again,,,, really I don't see what difference it makes , a Runway is a,,,,,,, Runway

As long as your able to land safely that's the main thing - right ?????

in all my Years of Flying Jetliners , I've yet to ever land at the right airport where I wanted to go,,,, anyway, end up renting a car majority of the time anyway.

I tell All my Flight School Students,,, Just FLY the plane and forget about everything else !!!!

1 time I left Los Angeles headed for Seattle ,,, and ended up in San Diego,,,, and I thought I was in Las Vegas ?????????

Also my plane and me are available for Charter if anybodys intersteaded

Of course in real life landing on the right runway is crucial - mainly determined by wind direction. Land with the wind behind you and chances are you'll run off the runway unless you go around. Not to mention other air traffic!

Landing at the wrong airport is very common in general aviation. It nearly happened to me during my cross country flight test many years ago - a hazy day and 2 airfields with similar runway directions close together. Luckily I realised before the red face day happened and I corrected myself but I have heard and read about it many times. It's quite dangerous!

As for a commercial passenger flight - that's very serious.

Some impressive and hair raising landings!

It almost always happens when airports with similar runway configurations are relatively close to each other, the pilots have been given a visual approach by ATC and then do not follow the instrument approach information. Rule No. 1 in aviation safety is check and double-check the information. As instrument student pilots we learn early on not to trust our senses but later on, believing that our experience has made us oh so much smarter, we often forget that lesson.

Even in CAVU weather, instruments are our friends. But they, too, need to be double- and cross-checked. Remember the American Airlines fatal accident at Cali, Columbia, where the crew tuned the correct frequency but didn't check its Morse identifier and flew into a mountain; the airport of intended landing used the same frequency for a close-in NDB but with a different identifier...dumb setup and a tragic reminder of how we have to always, always be very alert.

There was also the C-17 that landed at the wrong Airport...

And the Dreamlifter that did the same thing, too.

When all those Airports are close together, all those PAPI lights blur into each other!
