The nearest I get to experience that in my California Flight Sim flights, is landing/taking off at Santa Catalina Airfield [KAVX] in my GA aeroplanes after an over-water trip from Los Angeles!

It can be very scary in high winds......just don't run out of runway....trust me!.... ...!

....the drop over the ends can be quite dramatic!.... ....!

I have had some scary landings at Canberra in Dash 8's.
The wind can be quite severe at times.

To the layman, these look like dangerous maneuvers... it's just the skill of the Pilots, putting the bird down as close to the Numbers as possible!

Mmm, tricky. It is a shame, but sadly it's a fact of life and windy, mid ocean, airports. Sadly St Helena has only ever been accessible by ship and I suspect the airlink was much looked forward too. Ascension is probably an hour or so's flying time away, so in the interim you wonder if they may have to consider jet service out to Ascension then a lighter STOL aircraft down to St Helena, negating some of the problems of a normal approach in a 737.
